Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. His father, Johann, was a musician in the court orchestra, and his mother, Maria Magdalena Keverich, was the daughter of a cook. Beethoven's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he began taking piano lessons from his father at the age of four. By the age of 12, Beethoven had composed his first piece of music, a set of variations on a theme by Mozart.
In 1787, Beethoven moved to Vienna to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. However, Mozart's teaching methods did not suit Beethoven, and he soon returned to Bonn. In 1792, Beethoven returned to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn, one of the most celebrated composers of the time. Haydn recognized Beethoven's talent, but was often critical of his unconventional approach to music.
Struggles with Deafness
In 1796, Beethoven began to experience symptoms of deafness. Initially, he thought it was a temporary problem, but over time his hearing loss became permanent. Beethoven's deafness was a devastating blow to his career, but he refused to give up on music. He continued to compose, using a slate to write down his ideas. Despite his deafness, Beethoven's music became increasingly complex and powerful.
Major Works
Beethoven's major works include nine symphonies, five piano concertos, and thirty-two piano sonatas. His most famous works include the "Eroica" Symphony (Third Symphony),the "Moonlight" Sonata (Piano Sonata No. 14),and "Für Elise" (Bagatelle No. 25). Beethoven's music is characterized by its emotional depth, its innovative use of harmony and rhythm, and its soaring melodies.
